After reading 'The Clock of Man' by Eric Lomax

Bonnie Goodfellow

Her empire falls from Singapore.
We watch his life-and-death
experience play out as
“The Railway Man” and then I write:

So many conflicts
in our past 100 years.
Yes, we must remember them.

Yet it's not enough,
this remembrance
of those who died in war.

Still less adequate
to say, forget it.
Get over it.

Go home and live
your tomorrows.
For the body remembers trauma.

We must remember them
then reconcile gently
with our past

to move on
and live today in peace.
The clock man tells us so, who
learned to live by railway clocks.
